Quinn's Auction Galleries is proud to present a Catalog Auction of rare and important books, prints, and maps on the subject of exploration, travel, and the natural world on April 4, 2019 at 6:00PM EST.
The sale features the personal library of William E. Davies (1917-1990), USGS (United States Geological Survey) geologist, polar explorer, and recipient of the Antarctic Medal from US Congress. His collection of books from the “Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration” includes a signed Shackleton volume and John Ross' "A Voyage of Discovery" from 1819.
Travel and Exploration continues to be featured in this auction with works on the Middle East; the archive of author Jane Geniesse, which includes more than 70 letters by British explorer Freya Stark; maps of early America; watercolors of Pacific species of fish circa 1856, and the compass used during the Kantuta Raft expeditions.
The auction rounds out with a significant grouping of rare natural history prints, with a range of subjects including Botany, Ornithology, Quadrupeds, Entomology, and Conchology.

A letter written by Abraham Lincoln in the early days of the Civil War, a document from 1793 signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson; and a rare first-edition copy of Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) are a few of the highlight lots. Items from the Kennedy, Nixon, Roosevelt and Truman White House years make up a significant portion of the sale. Items sourced from the private collections of a former Secret Service agent, and Mary B. Gallagher, Jackie Kennedy's personal secretary, provide a unique perspective on the lives of former presidents and their families.
In addition to items of Presidential and Americana significance, the sale also offers a fascinating grouping of early religious and Biblical texts, including a first-edition copy of The Gospel According to Saint John, one of 2,000 copies printed by the British and Foreign Bible Society (London, 1804), with text in English and Mohawk Native American.
