Guatemalan Folk Saints:
“These folk saints reflect a belief system deeply rooted in the ancient Mayan religion of Guatemala and influenced by centuries of superimposed Christianity imported initially by invading European explorers and their accompanying Catholic missionaries. The missionaries zealously proselytized those they consider heathens with Catholicism, a faith they asserted was the only correct religion, with its singular God. This alien religion has left its indelible mark on the Mayan culture…..Guatemala’s Folk Saints, Pieper, 2002. P.10
The first European contact with the Maya was in 1502 however, Cortés made the first significant intrusion in 1525 beginning over a century of conflict that ended in the final defeat of the Maya in 1697. During the Spanish Conquest folk saints emerged that were part of a blending of animism, Maya theology and Catholicism. The Guatemalan folk saints of the 20th century in this catalog are part of that evolution.
